This webinar is part of a series of continuing education sessions planned for 2023 by the Centre for Ageing and Pastoral Studies (CAPS) in conjunction with the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture.

Led by Beaté Steller, this webinar will explore the gifts and challenges of using technology in spiritual care as a way of connecting meaningfully with older people.

Drawing from her extensive experience of using technology in her role as a Spiritual Wellbeing Coordinator, Beaté Steller will share insights from her book, Tech-connect – Staying Meaningfully Connected in Aged Care (2017), where she developed a spiritual care program using technology to connect a resident unable to attend her grandson’s wedding. Little did we know then that this topic would become even more critical with the advent of COVID-19, when technology became an essential tool for spiritual care practitioners.

In addition, Beaté will discuss her recent participation in a panel at the International Conference of Ageing and Spirituality in Canada in June 2023. During this panel, she spoke about “Making Meaning With Tech: Hopes & Cautions” alongside Dr. Tracy Trothen and Dr. Cosmin Munteanu. Beaté will explore the implications of using robots and Artificial Intelligence in aged care, outlining different perspectives on the opportunities and challenges when making meaning with technology.

About Beaté Steller:
Beaté Steller is a Sydney based published author, accredited mental health social worker, adult educator, counsellor, clinical supervisor, spiritual care practitioner and registered nurse. She has gathered experience in these variety of roles over 40 years in a variety of sectors and industries, including health, palliative and aged care, social housing, and long-term unemployment. Beaté was Lifeline Sydney/Sutherland’s telephone and suicide prevention trainer for 10 years. She has a special interest in working with older people and has been working in Residential Aged Care for over the last 14 years in the roles of Social Worker and Spiritual Wellbeing Co-ordinator.

She had her first book published in 2017 called Tech-connect –Staying Meaningfully Connected in Aged Care. She completed her second master’s degree in Ageing and Pastoral Studies in 2019 and her research was on Mindfulness Meditation Groups in Residential Aged Care which was published as: Mindfulness meditation in residential aged care: what frail older people identified as beneficial for their spiritual care and well-being, Journal of Religion, Spirituality & Spirituality & Ageing. Her latest book is called Meditation for Older People: A How to Guide for Mindfulness Meditation Groups.

Beaté has a history of working with people from Indigenous and culturally diverse backgrounds. Beaté also holds professional membership with the AASW, AAOS, the NSW Health Services Profession as a Registered Nurse.
