Chaplaincy Management Training Program

Leading a successful chaplaincy department is filled with opportunities and challenges. Many directors have requested tools and training to provide successful leadership to support their staff and provide quality spiritual care to patients, family, and staff.

The Spiritual Care Associations’ Chaplaincy Management Training Program is designed to meet this need for current or aspiring directors of chaplaincy/spiritual care departments of any size. This includes both inpatient and outpatient operations as well as remote clinics. In addition to the online courses, instruction and webinar training benefits of the program, candidates will also have the opportunity to virtually meet other directors or aspiring directors and create a network of peers.

This is an online webinarw spread over 4 months. The next program commences in September 2020. Successful candidates will receive the Chaplaincy Management Certificate.


About the Program

This is a 4-month program that is ideal for current or aspiring directors of chaplaincy/spiritual care departments of any size.

The program consists of:

  • Welcome Webinar
    The candidate will participate in a 60-minute online webinar with HCCN’s Director of Education. During this overview webinar, the entire program will be explained, and the candidates will have the opportunity to ask questions. This will also provide a good opportunity for the candidates to meet one another. It will allow for opportunities to network and build professional relationships with peers throughout the country.
  •  

  • Online Course 1: Building a Chaplaincy Department
    The candidate will have 4 weeks of self-guided course work to complete this online course. The Building a Chaplaincy Department course will address the components of developing and managing a high-quality department, based on latest research data and proven best practices. Through a step-by-step process, the course will provide the candidate with resources and samples of the details to be addressed, including planning and implementation. The candidate will receive in the mail a printed Study Guide for this course.

  • Discussion Webinar
    The candidate will participate in a 90-minute online webinar where an industry expert with decades of experience will cover a basic overview of management issues and will tie comments with the content covered during the Building a Chaplaincy Department course.
  •  

  • Online Course 2: Delivery and Continuity of Care for Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care
    The candidate will have 4 weeks of self-guided course work to complete the Delivery and Continuity of Care for Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care course. This course will guide the candidate through an overview of health care delivery and continuity of care with information, activities, and resources to increase understanding of the United States health care system. Candidates will be provided with opportunities to articulate their new knowledge and consider practical ways to integrate it into their scope of practice, provision of care, best practices and protocols. The candidate will receive in the mail a printed Study Guide for this course.

  • Discussion Webinar
    The candidate will participate in a 90-minute online webinar where an industry expert with decades of experience will cover a basic overview of management issues and will tie comments with the content covered during the Delivery and Continuity of Care for Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care.

  • Online Course 3: What We Do Matters: Continuous Quality Improvement within Chaplaincy and Health Care
    The candidate will have 4 weeks of self-guided course work to complete this online course. This course is designed to enable learners to be a full participant in CQI processes and to establish and sustain a CQI program for a chaplaincy or spiritual care service using Lean and Six Sigma. Participants will learn the basic language in order to recognize CQI’s underlying assumptions, language, and processes. The module will teach assumptions and language that is pretty much universal to all CQI systems and the language particular to Lean Six Sigma which is the most widely used system. Participants will learn how to set up and run simple Lean or Six Sigma projects and be able to avoid the most common mistakes in this process. Examples from hospital practice will be provided.

  • Volunteer Training Resources
    Volunteers are an important aspect of any successful chaplaincy department. The candidate will receive a hard copy of the HealthCare Chaplaincy Network’s Volunteer Training Manual, as well as a 60-minute video How to Develop and Maintain an Effective Volunteer Program.

  • Meet the Experts Webinar
    The candidate will participate in a 90-minute online webinar with a panelist of experts who have personally managed successful chaplaincy departments. Moderated by HCCN’s Director of Education, the distinguished panelists will share personal reflections and best practices of managing efficient departments. The candidates will have an opportunity to ask questions and interact with the panelists.
  •  

  • Final Project
    Candidates will have to write a strategic plan for their departments using the criteria from the activity in the Building a Chaplaincy Department course with the addition of: Implementation plan for chaplaincy services, Chaplain delivery of care process, Department spiritual assessment and documentation used by all staff and any training needed, Quality improvement project with SMART goals. There will be a webinar, facilitated by an instructor, to explain the final project and deliverables.

  • Final Webinar
    At the conclusion of the program, there will be a final webinar facilitated by the Director of Education. This is meant to be a summary of the material that had been covered, as well as an opportunity for candidates to present their final projects.

Successful participants will receive the Chaplaincy Management Certificate.

Cost

The cost to participate is $1,630 per person. It includes all the written and electronic materials. A 50% deposit is due with the application. The second half is due within one month of the start of the program. January 2020 Cohort is SOLD OUT! Next cohort begins in September 2020.
