In a chaplaincy role you often work with people who are experiencing times of crisis, grief and loss or have experienced a crucial life changing incident. Engaging with such vulnerable people requires sensitivity and the discerning application of extensive knowledge and skills. To equip Chaplains, The Salvation Army developed a nationally accredited Diploma of Chaplaincy course which can be completed in approximately two years (Classroom and Online).
What is Chaplaincy?
Chaplains meet people at their point of need to provide support. This support can be anything from a chat about how things are going, to helping people through the death of a loved one. They are committed to helping in any way they can, offering the highest level of professional confidentiality, no matter what your beliefs are. The role of the Chaplain can be quite broad with an emphasis on offering practical, emotional and spiritual support. Services may include: pastoral care, advocacy, spiritual guidance, worship, debriefing, education, and prayer
Chaplains can provide support in courts, prisons, emergency services, hospitals, hotels, airports and rural areas.
Chaplaincy Course
The Diploma of Chaplaincy (10635NAT) has been developed by The Salvation Army to meet the training needs of chaplains.
The successful course participant will qualify with the advanced training necessary to work as a Christian chaplain in a range of contexts and will equip you with the necessary skills to provide services and/or interventions to clients in a variety of settings.

Course Structure
The total number of units required for completion of the course is 14 units (10 core, 4 electives) with students able to select four electives to best meet their workplace requirements. It is approximately 2 years to complete this diploma.
Course requirements also include 140 hours of work placement and 10 hours of pastoral supervision (with a qualified supervisor) at student’s own arrangement and cost.
Entry Requirements
The following entry requirements apply to this course. You must:
- have some biblical and theological studies, at a Certificate IV level, OR be able to demonstrate that you have a proficient level of biblical and theological knowledge
- arrange and pay for 10 hours of pastoral supervision (with a professional counsellor)
- have sufficient literacy skills to read and interpret the Bible, prayer books or other religious material
- provide (if you are not currently employed by The Salvation Army) a letter of sponsorship from your denominational senior clerical representative
- be over 18 years of age
- meet the requirements for working with children
- complete Police Check from the relevant authority
